20 Animated Films in Oscar Contention

Attention fans of animated film: Late last week, Variety weighed the odds on the 20 animated movies of 2009 eligible for the five Best Animated Film Oscar nominations.

Disney / Pixar’s Up is a guarantee. Monsters vs. Aliens will probably grab one (big box office plus generally happy critics), as will Coraline (above). What about the rest? Something mainstream like Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs? Maybe Ponyo, the latest title from master Hayao Miyazaki? How about more mature content like Mary and Max, from Harvie Krumpet director Adam Eliot?
Here’s the alphabetical list:
Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel; Astro Boy; Battle for Terra; Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs; Coraline; Disney’s A Christmas Carol; The Dolphin: Story of A Dreamer; Fantastic Mr. Fox; Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs; Mary and Max; The Missing Lynx; Monsters vs. Aliens; 9; Planet 51; Ponyo; The Princess and the Frog; The Secret of Kells; Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure; A Town Called Panic; Up.
And here’s Variety’s analysis, in a handy pdf
