3:10 to Yuma’s Peter Fonda “Took Lead” For Real

Ever-engaging actor Peter Fonda provided a hell of a revelation on NPR yesterday: In his real life he once — as he puts it — took lead. He’s been shot. In the gut. He was just shy of 11 years old.
This detail came up while Fonda discussed the upcoming remake of the western 3:10 to Yuma, which hits theaters September 7. Early in the movie, Fonda’s character is shot. While shooting (the movie, not a gun), the dramatic Fonda told director James Mangold and the crew he had experienced this for real.
“Stupid shooting accident” Fonda explained on NPR’s Fresh Air, telling how he himself pulled the trigger. “The bullet hit my ribcage, tumbled through the tip of my liver, below the top of my stomach, and went through the middle of my left kidney. I knew I was dying.”
Obviously, he lived. But hell if the guy can’t do some serious sense memory for the big scenes…
Fonda also talked about his favorite westerns — including his dad’s The Ox-Bow Incident – and gave away another tidbit: In Easy Rider, they never revealed what specific drug they were carrying. Hey man, does it really matter?!
