This week, The Bourne Ultimatum cracks The Top Ten, after an impressive $32 million in its 2nd weekend. And Transformers is now positioned to overtake Pirates as the 3rd biggest movie of the summer (and 2007). The suits at Paramount have to wonder how many viable Transformers sequels they can release in the coming years. But doesn’t every studio think sequel as soon as the money hits? I wonder how Norbit II is coming along …

Michael Cera and Jonah Hill in SuperbadWILL SUPERBAD BE
SUPER-RICH?

With Knocked Up’s success, Michael Cera’s growing popularity, and the reactions surrounding the R-rated trailer, Superbad is perfectly lined up to become one of the most popular movies of the year. The late summer release date is right on the money, as the film’s primary audience trickles back into school… where they’ll quote Superbad, laugh about it, make it their own. And probably see it again.

INDIE MOVIE REPORT
This week’s independent or limited-release films of note:
2 Days In Paris Movie Poster2 Days in Paris: A nutso romantic comedy written, directed by and starring Julie Delpy (official site). She and her American man (Adam Goldberg) try to jumpstart their relationship by visiting France. Where lots of her baggage resides… Last weekend, 2 Days in Paris made more money per screen than any other movie.

Rocket Science: The first narrative feature from Jeffrey Blitz, director of the popular spelling bee documentary Spellbound. This new one is a high school-based comedy about a stuttering kid (18-year-old TV actor Reece Thompson) who’s talked into joining the school debate team. Rocket Science opened on only six screens, where it grossed more per engagement than The Bourne Ultimatum.
