Bill Maher’s RELIGULOUS Pushed Out to October

If you’re excited to see Bill Maher’s Religulous in late spring / early summer, you’re gonna need the patience of Jesus himself. Well, not really, but that makes for a good joke. Lionsgate has decided to delay the movie’s theatrical release from June 20 (limited) to a new date of October 3.
According to Lionsgate president Tom Ortenberg, the distributor is aiming for high-quality fall film festivals as a springboard for the movie. Oddly enough, Ortenberg admits to going for the big bucks, wanting to “emulate the box office successes of films like Fahrenheit 9/11 and SiCKO, which had major launches at prestigious fests.”
I wonder what Maher — one of our finest modern cynics — has to say about that approach.
