BOX OFFICE BATTLE: “Cloverfield” Creatures vs. “27 Dresses” Dames
The first cinematic battle royale of 2008 is set for this weekend: The marauding monsters of Cloverfield (left) and the wedded women of 27 Dresses (below). Think of it as the big-screen version of the weekend’s NFL Championship Games.

A new era thriller vs. a romantic comedy. Cloverfield theaters will be filled with hype-happy guys that haven’t had a fix (and maybe a girl) since Transformers. 27 Dresses will be the quintessential date movie, with Katherine Heigl’s presence making it easier for chicks to convince their guys to tag along.
So is there more of audience #1 — who are definitely younger — or audience #2? Both films are opening on more than 3000 U.S. screens, with Cloverfield breaking a January record for number of theaters.
But this isn’t really an even fight. First, Cloverfield is the most succesfully hyped movie since The Blair Witch Project — even we here at The Lobby have been analyzing the analysis since July. Second, the Katie Holmes-Diane Keaton-Queen Latifah caper Mad Money (could the casting cover more demographics?) will steal some crossover women from 27 Dresses.
What’s your call?
