BOX OFFICE UPDATE: Cloverfield Crushes Early
UPDATE: With an estimated $46 million box-office gross, Cloverfield has broken the record for the four-day Martin Luther King Jr. weekend.
27 Dresses earned an estimated $27.3 million (that’s a pretty strong second). The Bucket List finished third. Mad Money, released on fewer screens than the other two premieres, grossed a little over $9 million. (estimates courtesy Variety)
ORIGINAL POST:
If Friday box office is any indication — and it usually is — Cloverfield will not only out-gross 27 Dresses this weekend, but it will overperform for Paramount.
Cloverfield’s opening day box office estimate was $16.9 million, the highest January premiere day in history. According to boxofficeguru, the three-day weekend could yield $43M for the J.J. Abrams-produced thriller. (and up to $50M for the four-day weekend.)
27 Dresses could pull around $28 million; Mad Money, about $8 million.
I love this one from boxofficeguru: Cloverfield and 27 Dresses were made to be released together. Because 1 + 18 + 08 = 27. Hey, when movie geeks meet math geeks, count me in.
