Decades Project II: Top Ten Films of the 1960s

In late August, our illustrious crew over at filmcritic.com began the Top Ten project to end all Top Ten projects. Okay, maybe not, but definitely a Top Ten to end the decade. Between now and year’s end, we’ll release a top ten movies list for every decade from the 1950s to the present.

First, Sunset Blvd. led the 1950s list. (Here’s my personal 1950s submission).

Now available: The Top Ten films of the 1960s.

The filmcritic.com 1960s list is an accurate reflection of the decade, with representation from the U.S., Britain, Italy and France, and an incredible variety of genre: comedy, epic, satire, thriller, and even classically “arthouse”.

Peter O’Toole and Omar Sharif in Lawrence of Arabia

Here’s the top ten I submitted for the consensus. Only four made the final list. Enjoy and debate as you will…

1. Lawrence of Arabia (Lean, 1962)
2. 2001: A Space Odyssey (Kubrick, 1968)
3. Psycho (Hitchcock, 1960)
4. To Kill A Mockingbird (Mulligan, 1962)
5. Doctor Zhivago (Lean, 1965)
6. The Odd Couple (Saks, 1968)
7. Midnight Cowboy (Schlesinger, 1969)
8. Dr. Strangelove (Kubrick, 1964)
9. Fahrenheit 451 (Truffaut, 1966)
10. Mary Poppins (Stevenson, 1964)
