Disappointing Movie Endings for 2007?

Lobby readers have recently been debating and commenting about the endings for two movies: Frank Darabont’s film version of The Mist and The Coen Brothers’ exceptional adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s No Country for Old Men (winner of the National Board of Review’s Best Picture). NY Times blogger The Carpetbagger (aka David Carr) will tell you that’s just the tip of the iceberg for endings worth analyzing.
In The Carpetbagger’s blog entry yesterday — in which we were honored to be included — he mentions a series of troubling third acts in outstanding films. In some instances, he feels the movies fall apart as a result:
:: Gone Baby Gone: “a criss-cross attempt to stitch up the story at the end”
LOBBY NOTE: Agreed, but we think director Ben Affleck handled a convoluted shakeout quietly and efficiently — and with good editing.
American Gangster: “little in the way of logic”
Michael Clayton: avoids “the easy and the pat … veers into both to bring the movie home”
There Will Be Blood: “nearly flies off the rails”
