EARLY MOVIE PREVIEW: Mike Myers’ “The Love Guru”

By Norm Schrager at September 8, 2007 | 5:04 pm | Print

Now shooting in Toronto: The comedy The Love Guru, Mike Myers’ first writing/acting effort since 2002′s Austin Powers in Goldmember, which I still love, by the way.

QUESTION: Have a favorite Mike Myers movie? I know, it’s So I Married An Axe Murder, but just tell us anyway.

THE PLOT: Myers plays Pitka, a Canadian (American?) who becomes a guru in India and then returns to North America. While here, he comes to the aid of a guy with romantic troubles and helps the Toronto Maple Leafs win the Stanley Cup. Well, that last part is directly from Myers, but I don’t think he’s kidding.

In an interview with moviesonline.ca, Myers discussed the process of creating Pitka:

I came up with this character and I would tour it in little theaters in New York. Just have little secret shows. The Marx Bros. used to tour their movies for a year before they filmed them. I did this same process with ‘Austin Powers.’

We did find a few April 2007 listings for “Guru Pitka” performances at The Magnet Theater in New York City. Man, those must have been a riot.

Actor Romany MalcoTHE CAST: Myers, Jessica Alba — who just mentioned The Love Guru on Letterman — Verne Troyer (yeah!), Romany Malco (right) as a hockey player with a broken marriage and Justin Timberlake as the athlete that steals Malco’s wife. Of course. Though I don’t think I buy Timberlake as a pro athlete. Quick, somebody rent Rob Lowe’s Youngblood.

THE DIRECTOR: First-timer Marco Schnabel, who did second unit work on Goldmember and both Meet The Parents movies — all directed by Myers buddy Jay Roach. Schnabel also wrote that Noah Wyle made-for-TV adventure The Librarian: Return to King Solomon’s Mines.

THE RELEASE DATE: June 20, 2008

Ugh … how I have grown to despise Mike Myers.

Really? I think the guy’s pretty talented. I guess I’m in the minority in thinking Goldmember was a good movie. How come you’re sick of him?

Goldmember was only a good movie if you had never viewed a movie before.

Myers has three stupid accents that he has been recycling since SNL, and all of his films have the same dumb, mugging tone to them.

He needs to get a new act.

    I’ve viewed lots of movies.
I’ve studied a bunch of movies.
    I’ve reviewed hundreds of movies.

    I still like Goldmember.

    Later man.

I was at the Leafs game last night and they were filming during the intermission. After the Leafs game they were filming the part where the Leafs win the Cup. I was at the arena until about midnight because they needed extras to say behind the net.
