Early Preview: New Gus Van Sant Film Now Shooting

Director Gus Van SantWhether you prefer the large scope of Milk or the quiet terror of Elephant, it’s undeniable that Gus Van Sant has an indie sensibility regardless of a film’s size or volume. With recent titles, that sensibility has death or murder in its midst: the two films mentioned above, Paranoid Park and Last Days. Van Sant’s new untitled film just began production in Portland, OR earlier this month, and it continues that string, focusing on two young adults preoccupied with their own mortality.

The shoot is scheduled to be short: Just about 6 1/2 weeks, according to notes from Imagine Entertainment, who’s producing. The young couple in question will be played by Hollywood offspring Henry Hopper (son of Dennis) and In Treatment veteran Mia Wasikowska (better known as Sophie to you IT Couch Potatoes).

Schuyler Fisk and Sissy SpacekA couple of online pubs have made reference to the film’s short who’s who of movie kids. In addition to Hopper, who’s essentially never acted before, the movie also includes Sissy Spacek’s daughter, Schuyler Fisk (left, American Gun, Orange County) and is being co-produced by Bryce Dallas Howard — who’s co-producing with her dad Ron, of course.

Van Sant has cast inexperienced and non-actors before, so I’d say we fans of the filmmaker can absolutely give him the benefit of the doubt. We’ll see this untitled movie some time in 2011.
