Early RELIGULOUS Review: Maher’s Doc Is a Winner
By Norm Schrager at August 21, 2008 | 12:46 pm | Print
Robert Koehler of Variety has filed the first major review of Religulous, the upcoming documentary from Bill Maher and Borat director Larry Charles, and it’s hugely positive. The film’s release date is October 3, but it’s running now for one week in New York City and Claremont, CA, to qualify for Oscar consideration. That’s some serious thinking on Lionsgate’s part…
Koehler calls it “brilliant” and “incendiary,” and is even predicting big dollars for the film’s theatrical run and DVD release.
Here are the high points so you don’t have to read the whole thing (oh, okay, read it all if you want).
:: “suggests the kind of film (George) Carlin might have made in his prime.” :: “To the film’s credit, Maher never engages in Michael-Moore style gotcha tactics”
:: “Maher’s transformation into one of America’s sharpest social critics is remarkable. He takes no script credit, but his periodic monologues to the camera are undeniably written, and written well.”

I’m really looking forward to this film.

Yeah, you and me both. I’m only wondering how much self-promotion Maher might do when Real Time returns on HBO. Like I’ve said, I don’t agree with the guy all the time, but he’s entertaining as hell when he makes logical sense (which is usually, I suppose).

Saw it at the Toronto Film Fest, it was fantastic. Was so funny, i’m still laughing. It’s going to be the BIG surprise comedy of 2008.

What do you mean when you say it will be a “surprise.” Meaning it will be more popular than expected?
