Famed Bollywood Actor Sentenced To Six Years
Of special interest to Indian cinema fans, or those of you curious about Bollywood…
Sanjay Dutt, who’s appeared in over 100 Indian films, was sentenced to six years in prison for his involvement with bombers who killed 257 people in Mumbai in 1993. Dutt, who turned 48 on Sunday, currently has three films yet to be released including Kidnap, about a father searching for his daughter.
(Kidnapping has been a hot-button subject for years in India, occuring often enough in the state of Bihar to be called “an industry” by journalists.)
Dutt began as a child actor in 1971, appearing in a film directed by his father, Sunil Dutt. In 1981, Sunil directed him again in his first starring role.
Sanjay Dutt has won two Filmfare Awards, the Indian equivalent of the Oscar, and has been nominated for seven others.
The bombing trial in which Dutt was sentenced has taken over 12 years, resulting in 20 life sentences and jail time for 50+ others.
