You can hardly go a few months without coming across the movie genre we like to call “uplifters”. Remember the Titans. Glory Road. Pride. Akeelah and the Bee. Against-all-odd tales — many dealing with racism — that aim for swelled hearts and weepie tears.
For his directorial debut, Denzel Washington chose one such story, the 1930s-based The Great Debaters. Washington built well on the history of the “uplifter,” with a cast that includes Forest Whitaker and Kimberly Elise, and acclaim from the Chicago Sun-Times, New York Times, and African American Film Critics group. Now you can win a copy of The Great Debaters 2-Disc Collector’s Edition DVD.
