GENERATION KILL: Episode 4
We’re nearly halfway through this unorthodox 8 hours-plus miniseries and First Recon’s world is amping up: more stress, more tension and more dissenting thought. That’s how Episode 4, “Combat Jack,” begins on HBO tonight.

First Recon has some time to chill being so far ahead geographically, giving some men time to question activity and voice their displeasure at leadership.
“Combat Jack” is revealed early in the episode as Captain America begins digging a hole in the desert. It’s explained that he feels the need to be in a solitary position… Cpl. Person then gets pissed off when his first “combat jack” is rudely interrupted. You can figure this out…
Before Bravo moves out, a clergy officer scours the men looking for attendees for a service. He meets ridicule from some, Iceman (Alexander Skarsgard, left) in particular, who’s resentful the guy doesn’t carry a weapon or have to hump like the rest of the Marines.
Alpha receives a new mission that sends them in the opposite direction of Bravo: Recover the body of a Marine murdered in Ah Shatra, in the midst of searching for Enemy #1, Chemical Ali. Rumors fly fast that the killed soldier was crucified… Alpha’s job takes a little unexpected twist when the U.S.-trained Iraqi Freedom Fighters show up to help.
After clearing a small hamlet, Bravo faces some enemy fire, giving Trombley (Billy Lush) a chance to redeem himself. Alpha moves into Ah Shatra while Bravo sets up a roadblock in Al Hayy — and realizes they don’t have a real protocol for stopping cars. The result isn’t pretty. In describing the roadblock mission, Fick (Stark Sands) says, “I know this looks like some Blackhawk Down shit…”
Episode 4 is the first in the series directed by Simon Cellan Jones, nominated for a BAFTA TV Award in the UK last year for The Trial of Tony Blair.
