GOLDEN GLOBES: Winners and Shoulda Wons
We’re already skeptical of the Golden Globes, so Sunday night’s awards announcement was surely a gift from the movie gods: It lasted 35 minutes. The downside: It was hosted by personalities from the flashy gossip shows. C’mon, folks like Mary Hart presenting award-worthy movies is like Perez Hilton hosting CNN Reports. With Billy Bush.
Best Picture winners: Tim Burton’s Sweeney Todd and le grande epic Atonement — a far easier choice than the challenging No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood, either of which shoulda won.
Best Actor winners: Good choices actually. Daniel Day-Lewis (over George Clooney) and Johnny Depp. Ryan Gosling had touchy subject matter in Lars and The Real Girl, but the voters took Depp’s singing (”gosh, I didn’t know he could sing!”)
Best Actress winners: First, Julie Christie in Away From Her, a selection that gets our vote as well. Jodie Foster was nominated because, well, she made a movie last year; Angelina Jolie was nominated because she remains stoic throughout A Mighty Heart and then wails her ass off at the end; Cate Blanchett was nominated because the international press probably still loves the first Elizabeth, which is beyond my thinking.
Second winner: Marion Cotillard who played Edith Piaf in La vie en rose. She’s the only woman in the category playing a real person, and she had to research, impersonate, emote and, of course, sing (see Johnny Depp). Many would say the shoulda wons are Ellen Page (Juno) and Nikki Blonsky (Hairspray). An Oscar nomination for Cotillard is a guarantee.
Best Screenplay: Why do the Golden Globes split films and performances into two groups, yet combine original and adapted screenplays into one? Ugh, nobody understands writers. Now you ingrates see why there’s a strike?! Anyway, the winner is the “shoulda won” the Coens’ adaptation of No Country for Old Men. Nominee Diablo Cody is the flavor of the month — a talented flavor — and Aaron Sorkin was nominated because everyone is enamored with The American President and The West Wing… and were hoping for more of the same.
Best Director: Julian Schnabel for The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. Schnabel, the Coens and Burton are shoo-ins for Oscar nominations, in my opinion. The Academy Award’s up for grabs, especially as indecisive Oscar voters feel weak-kneed about this win.
