Gotham Independent Film Awards Events

If you’re in the New York City area, the IFP’s Independent Film Awards Series has some standout events running through December 6. And the top price for any single event: just $12. Some are even free. How’s that for recession-proof? Go to the IFP site and click on “Public Film Series”.

Here’s what caught my eye:

Tonight, November 24:
The New Year Parade Movie PosterMoMA Modern Mondays, with the nominated filmmakers for Best Film Not Playing at a Theater Near You. Capote director Bennett Miller hosts. My personal favorite: Tom Quinn’s The New Year Parade, an honest, melancholy look at a soon-to-be-divorced couple and their young adult kids. Quinn’s narrative bookends are authentic and original (Philadelphia’s Mummers Parade) and his actors are on the money. I saw Quinn at a film festival and wanted to tell him how great his movie is — but he was talking by the cupcake table and I chose not to disturb him. (Have I told this story before?) Tom, if you’re reading this, you’ve made a wonderful movie.

Sunday, November 30: Conversations with this year’s nominees for Breakthrough Director. Stars among the group for sure, but I’m partial to Lance Hammer’s work in the deceptively quiet Ballast (below).

Monday, December 1: A screening of Melvin Van Peebles’ first feature, from 1968, Story of a 3-Day Pass.

Wednesday, December 3: Diverse filmmaker — and recent Entourage star(!) — Gus Van Sant does some Q&A after a screening of Milk.

Saturday, December 6: A final chance to see Van Peebles’ newest film, Confessionsofa Ex-Doofus-Itchyfooted Mutha. (The guy must have the greatest film titles in history.)

Here’s the IFP’s site. Go check stuff out, and let us know what you think.
