HALLOWEEN HANGOVER: Horror Movies for November
Halloween’s over and it’s time for some hair of the dog that bit you. But forget Saw, Hostel and The Descent. Don’t bother with Freddy, Pinhead and Jason. Here’s a handful of creepy, moody movies we recommend for your weekend viewing. (Plus, everything we just listed, and greats like Halloween and The Exorcist, are probably still out of stock.)
:: Rosemary’s Baby (1968)
Roman Polanski’s frightening Faustian tale, about a NYC apartment building of weirdos who sacrifice a young woman’s womb for their own cult desires. Literally spine-tingling, with undecipherable happenings that play like a disturbing clouded dream. Stars Mia Farrow and John Cassavetes, who never once sold his soul to the devil in real life…
:: The Believers (1987)
More New York City freakout stuff, this time focusing on paranoia and voodoo. Martin Sheen plays a police shrink caught up in the investigation of a group of old-school Santeria practitioners — the kind who believe in bodily sacrifice. Look for a very nervous Jimmy Smits in a small role. Directed by John Schlesinger (Midnight Cowboy, Marathon Man)
:: The Devil’s Backbone (2001)
Lobby reader Sam recommends this Guillermo del Toro thriller — and says it’s better than Pan’s Labyrinth. Like Labyrinth, this one also has a wartime backdrop and is seen through the eyes of a child. Young Carlos ends up at an orphanage haunted by an evil caretaker, a prophetic ghost… and a ticking bomb in the courtyard. Has an IMDb rating of 7.5 with over 8000 votes.
:: November (2004)
A tight creepy puzzle of a movie, with a surprisingly effective performance by Courteney Cox. After her boyfriend is murdered during a robbery, a photographer (Cox) has trouble with visions, headaches and her own reality. I watched this one late at night and it creeped the crap out of me. (Not literally).

I have The Haunting (1963) on my list, The Tingler, The Innocents, and I need to rewatch The Changeling. I’ll add these to my list. Thanks!
I have seen The Believers. Great flick- especially when the spiders crawl out of that lady’s cheek. Yipes!

Nice, fairly eclectic list! Is The Changeling the one with George C. Scott?
I had nearly forgotten about the spiders and the cheek in The Believers. I’m wigged out just thinking about it.
