Harry Potter Conundrum: New Movie or New Book?
Looks like Harry Potter has taken a chunk of interest away from… well, Harry Potter.
After zooming its way to a few box office records upon its July 11 release, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix may have been affected by this weekend’s unveiling of the new Potter book, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.”
Order of the Phoenix box office business dropped 58%, the 2nd largest Week 2 plummet of any Harry Potter film (behind The Prisoner of Azkaban.) The top film of this past weekend? The Adam Sandler happy-heteros-pretend-to-be-gay comedy I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry. Estimates have Chuck and Larry at just under $35 million, with Phoenix taking just over $32M.
In a Variety report, Warner Brothers distribution president Dan Fellman estimates the book was responsible for taking away 3-5% of the movie’s take. But he also points out that such an enormous opening weekend naturally leads to a giant dip the following weekend… Wow, this guy actually sounds reasonable.
More summer box office recap later this week.
