HBO Adds Alexander Payne, Alan Ball
Hot on the heels of their newest movie, Recount, HBO is collecting some top-flight talent to stop the sliding viewership. And possibly quiet the closed-minded masses who think the network sucks since the conclusion of The Sopranos…
:: Writer-director Alexander Payne, Oscar winner for Sideways, will develop a new series called Hung. It’s about a guy who’s, well, hung. No, not hanged, like from a rope. Hung, like in his pants. Once a high school hero, he discovers how to be more Superman than Middle-Age Man by putting his gift to good use. Whatever that means. The series concept is from married team Colette Burson and Dmitry Lipkin (The Riches).
:: Alan Ball (American Beauty writer, Six Feet Under creator, shown with Rachel Griffiths) is taking care of two HBO series.
If you like vampires and women’s prisons — no, not in the same show — you’ll find something in Mr. Ball’s future repertoire to please you.
:: A pilot has been ordered for Darren Star (Sex and the City) to adapt Tracy Quan’s novel Diary of a Manhattan Call Girl. Eliot Spitzer will act as creative consultant. No, we’re only joking!
:: Another pilot is in the works for a comedy about a woman caught between two gangs of housewives, Suburban Shootout.
