Horror Update: CRAZIES, LAST HORROR, BEST WORST MOVIE

By Norm Schrager at May 5, 2009 | 11:37 pm | Print

I’ve never compiled a “horror update” before, but recently caught a few items worth smashing together in one post.

:: THE CRAZIES

About a year ago, we gave you details about the upcoming remake of horror master George A. Romero’s The Crazies. Now, Overture Films has sent over the following updates.

:: Production is rolling, currently shooting in Iowa and Georgia; The film’s official release date is set for February 26, 2010.

:: The Crazies is being described as “a reinvention loosely based on the George A. Romero classic.”

:: Overture has written a pretty exciting plot summary for a recent press release. Maybe I’m a sucker for plotlines about psychotics and anarchy, but I dig the first paragraph:

Imagine living in a small town where everything is safe and happy…until suddenly it isn’t. Imagine your friends and neighbors going quickly and horrifically insane. In a terrifying tale of the “American Dream” gone horribly wrong, four friends find themselves trapped in their hometown in The Crazies a reinvention of the George Romero classic directed by Breck Eisner from a screenplay by Ray Wright (Pulse, Case 39) and Scott Kosar (The Amityville Horror, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre).

For those of you craving some old-school 1973 horror, here’s the trailer for the original The Crazies:

:: THE LAST HORROR FILM

Speaking of “crazies,” the folks at Troma (the company that brought you Toxic Avenger and Poultrygeist) have set May 19 as the DVD release date for 1982′s The Last Horror Film.

This release includes the uncut version of the movie, a version which has never been released on video in the US. The Last Horror Film stars the late character actor Joe Spinell, star of the Maniac films and buddy of Sylvester Stallone.

Here’s the trailer for the new DVD release of The Last Horror Film

:: BEST WORST MOVIE

If you would classify the bizarre Troll 2 (1990) as horror, Best Worst Movie might be for you. If you’ve actually seen Troll 2, Best Worst Movie is definitely for you.

This documentary chronicles the infamous history and inexplicable fandom surrounding the movie, once known on the IMDb as the worst film ever made. In short, Best Worst Movie is a riot, and I plan on writing more about it in the near future.

Here’s the trailer, just recently made available by the Hot Docs film festival:

:: AND FINALLY…
An aspiring young filmmaker sent us the following film last year, and I’d just been looking for the right place to post it. That filmmaker’s name is Jake Martin and, along with cohorts Anna and James, Jake’s produced a short that definitely has a Romero ring to it. See what you think.
