Ron Howard’s been directing movies for 32 years, and he’s never helmed a sequel. Until now.
This Friday, Angels & Demons, his Da Vinci Code follow-up, hits theaters and we’ve got the newest trailer directly from the good folks at Sony. But it’s more than just a trailer and kudos to the movie’s interactive team for knowing that fans of Dan Brown’s world love a good investigation. If you haven’t read the book, and want some level of surprise, don’t dig too deep. Otherwise, check this out.
Oh, and yeah, I know Angels & Demons is a prequel in terms of the novel and story, but Howard made Angels & Demons second, right? Of course, Tom Hanks is back as problem-solver extraordinaire Robert Langdon and Ewan McGregor — a guy who knows a thing or two about sequels — joins the fray.
Just like The Da Vinci Code, Angels & Demons will benefit from an enormous international release taking place all in one weekend, rather than a staggered schedule experienced by most movies. In fact, it will appear in a staggering 40 international markets between Wednesday and Friday, from Kazakhstan to the UK to Iceland.
When this strategy was applied for The Da Vinci Code, it paid huge box office dividends: The film grossed over $758 million worldwide, with the US take accounting for only 29% of that. And that was with lukewarm reviews. Imagine what will happen if critics really like Angels & Demons — I’ll let you know my opinion on Friday. Stay tuned.
