The Zellner Brothers have expanded from their repertoire of short films to full-length features with this look at a man dealing after a divorce. And it ain’t pretty. This is one of those movies that’s hard to watch but even harder to stop watching.

The unnamed main character takes the crap being thrown at him from all directions — from supervisors, his ex-wife and many more — bottling up anger later to be taken out on safer targets, like basketballs and containers of non-dairy creamer. When his cat Goliath goes missing, he’s pushed to the edge. At times Goliath tries your patience, but the Zellners are good at getting the audience to ride the emotional wave that comes from the main character… and the foreboding music of taiko drums and lawnmowers.

Severed Ways: The Norse Discovery of AmericaDrama
Speaking of taking crap, if you don’t mind watching a guy take one on film — you know, a real one — try this movie by Tony Stone about two Vikings stranded in the “New World” after their expedition retreats in response to a Native American attack. You’ll be in awe of the large, quiet landscapes and unsettled by the fact that these guys have little chance of getting home.

Severed Ways: The Norse Discovery of America

They build shelter, hunt for food and yes — even go to the bathroom using the New World brand of toilet paper known as leaves. Watching them survive, we forget even Vikings have insecurities. Which leads to a strange dream sequence with Gaby Hoffmann (Sleepless in Seattle) and an amazing ending. With purposefully anachronistic dialogue and music (Viking headbanging included!), you’ll think Severed Ways is either a cinematic masterpiece or two hours gone wrong. Watch it and let us know which side you choose.
