Jackie Chan Joins Martin Lawrence and Vin Diesel

No, we’re not reporting on some piece of curious casting news. It would seem that with Jackie Chan’s upcoming 2010 movie The Spy Next Door, the chopsocky charmer has begun heading down a path familiar to former badasses Martin Lawrence and Vin Diesel: that of the predictable family movie.
Here’s how it works: The actor plays against type, as some sort of lone cop / FBI agent / undercover spy, finds himself needing to protect / watch / educate kids and, in the process, learns what it’s like to love / share / feel. One kid is usually remarkably cute, another frustratingly confrontational. But they all make it work in the end. Goopy.
Yeah, it probably makes for safe, even entertaining fare parents can take their preteens to. But for the actors involved, it’s a little taste of no-turning-back.

Back to The Spy Next Door. This may be the most unintentionally funny movie poster of the year. First, it’s a direct design lift from Spy Kids. Second, the selected poses look about as comfortable — and appealing — as a box of nails. Finally… Jackie Chan, Billy Ray Cyrus, George Lopez. Adding any commentary to that would ruin it really.
The Spy Next Door will premiere during that virtual no-man’s-land of the movie schedule, early January (1.15.10 to be exact). It’s directed by family film veteran Brian Levant (Snow Dogs, Are We There Yet?)
