Judd Apatow’s FUNNY PEOPLE Begins Shooting

According to the good folks at Universal, Judd Apatow’s Funny People is now officially in production, having started filming in L.A. this week. While Apatow is a prolific writer and producer, this is only his third film as director (following two iconic comedies, The 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up). From top to bottom, Funny People is a veritable all-star showcase, focusing on the not-always-funny world of standup comedy.

Before we run through the cast, it’s worth mentioning the cinematographer, the superb Janusz Kaminski. Janusz Kaminski and Steven Spielberg on Indiana JonesIf he’s the DP, you’ve got a serious freakin’ film. Kaminski is known as Spielberg’s ace in the hole, and he’s been nominated for four Oscars, winning two (Schindler’s List, Saving Private Ryan).

Yeah, he shot the Vanilla Ice laugher Cold as Ice, but everyone’s gotta start somewhere. On to the cast.

:: From Camp Apatow: Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, triple threat Leslie Mann (that would be comic actor, hottie and wife)

:: Apatow’s old roommate: Adam Sandler; while in development, Funny People was known as the “Untitled Judd Apatow/Adam Sandler Project” (check out more on Apatow and Sandler in our You Don’t Mess With the Zohan coverage)

:: From the Apatow fringe: Jason Schwartzman (Walk Hard, “Freaks and Geeks”)

:: New FOJs (Friends of Judd): Eric Bana, RZA

As reported by a reader at slashfilm, the cast worked out their stand-up routines in September at the Upright Citizens Brigade in Los Angeles, with Sandler actually staying in character for the duration.

Funny People is scheduled for a July 31, 2009 release.
