More Movie Sequels and Remakes Than Ever?

By Norm Schrager at March 22, 2008 | 12:02 am | Print

Our friends at Burbanked created an ingenious trailer highlighting the redundant, regurgitated material coming to theaters in 2008. More Indiana Jones. More Mummy. A new Get Smart. And it got us thinking about just how many sequels and remakes were released in 2007. So we counted. 32. That’s 32 sequels and remakes in one year — or about 9% of all movies in theaters.

We’ve categorized these retreads and rehashes, as they are certainly not created equal. Or promoted equal(ly). So here we go:

Blockbusters That Ate Your Multiplex
Spider-Man 3, Shrek the Third, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, The Bourne Ultimatum, National Treasure: Book of Secrets

Old Reliables The Studios Can’t Part With
Rush Hour 3, Live Free or Die Hard, Ocean’s Thirteen, Saw IV, Resident Evil: Extinction, Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem

Potential Franchise Possibilities?
Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer

“In Too Deep” Mistakes
Evan Almighty, Hannibal Rising

Seriously Out of Ideas
Are We Done Yet?, 28 Weeks Later, The Hills Have Eyes 2, Hostel Part II, Daddy Day Camp

Done Again, Just Different
Hairspray, Halloween, TMNT, The Hitcher

Remakes of Movies Forgotten Or Foreign (so they’re like new!)
3:10 to Yuma, The Invasion, No Reservations, The Heartbreak Kid, I Think I Love My Wife, Interview

Huh?!
After Dark’s Horrorfest 2, Fay Grim

Obviously, these films are all of varying quality, but that’s not the point. This is: If you feel like you’ve seen it all before, that’s because you have. Remember that this year while watching The Incredible Hulk, Sex and the City, The X-Files 2, and new chapters of The Chronicles of Narnia, Harry Potter and… you get the point.

Thanks for the shout-out, Norm, and for the scary analysis. I suppose that 2007 and 08 won’t be that much different from other years in this regard, but these trends feel like they’re getting worse instead of better. But now, as we’re seeing a sequel being sold on the strength of Cory Feldman one-liners, I just have to believe that the End of Days must be near.

You mean there’s a sequel to End of Days, too?! Heh, I’m just kidding. No, seriously, is there?

The only Corey Feldman one-liner I wanna here is “I quit.”

If there IS an End of Days sequel, I’m guessing Corey Feldman is right near the top of the hacky producer’s wish list to star in it.
