Movie Poster Monday: GONZO: THE LIFE AND WORK OF DR. HUNTER S. THOMPSON

Gonzo Poster What’s cool about this movie poster for the Hunter S. Thompson (author of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas) documentary is that it’s created by Ralph Steadman, the same guy who drew illustrations for Thompson’s works.

It’s a little strange that it’s in the Steadman style but not necessarily the style found in Thompson’s books — it’s more of a re-imagining of the original.

Hmm. A comment on the film or Thompson himself, a man who constantly shifted (or chose not to) between his public persona, his written persona, and his private persona?

Made by Alex Gibney, the same guy who did Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room and the Academy-Award winning Taxi to the Dark Side, this documentary includes recreations as well as rare footage and unpublished work. Johnny Depp narrates the period of Thompson’s life that defined gonzo journalism — that blend of fact and fiction with the goal of capturing the greater truth.

The film premiered at Sundance to good reviews and will open in select theaters on July 4th. What better way to celebrate America than with the man who pursued the crumbling American Dream? Norm put it on his Top 10 Films to Watch at Sundance so it must be worth checking out.
