Movie Poster Monday: STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE

This week’s entry is another two-for-one. Here are two movie posters for Standard Operating Procedure, the latest from Errol Morris, probably the most important documentary filmmaker of the last 50 years. (click the posters to see them larger)
These are stark, dramatic, almost antiseptic. And the second one leads with Morris’ name, a clear sign that his fan base is large enough to sell a movie on his reputation. I would guess only Michael Moore has that kind of power to promote a documentary within a general audience.
In past films, Morris has examined the intricacies of human activity — and human thought — like few directors have ever attempted. The Thin Blue Line; Fast, Cheap and Out of Control; A Brief History of Time; and the essential The Fog of War… all paint an incredible picture of man’s ability to rationalize and exist.
With Standard Operating Procedure, Morris studies the incidents at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. The taglines state “The War on Terror Will Be Photographed” and “I Wouldn’t Recommend a Vacation to Iraq Anytime Soon.” Yikes. How will this one compare with the television movie The Ghosts of Abu Ghraib?
Standard Operating Procedure won the Jury Grand Prix at February’s Berlin International Film Festival, is scheduled to run at the upcoming Tribeca festival in April, and will begin a limited US run on April 25.
