UPDATE (12.23.09): Just in — The Crazies official final poster.

ORIGINAL POST: The press notes describe it as “the American Dream gone horribly wrong.” Heh, heh. It’s The Crazies, a remake / reimagining / reinvention of George A. Romero’s 1973 shocker, scheduled for a February 2010 release. Here are two recently released teaser posters for the film. Funky, and a bit frightening. A little bit 28 Days Later, a little bit Stephen King.

I’ve always been a big fan of Romero’s “Crazies”.
Many of its plot elements were lifted/stolen by the creators of the 1995 Dustin Hoffman film “Outbreak”–which has, of course, the obligatory Hollywood happy ending. Crazies did not have a happy ending but I suspect that the Hollywood remake of it will–except that they will leave wiggle room for a possible sequel. American cinema today is doomed by the fact that non-artist money people make all the key decisions. If one in twenty American movies is worth watching today I would be surprised. And the 5% worth seeing are usually remakes of prior European product. For example “State of Play” was quite good but it was taken from an old British television program and also borrowed from Pakula’s “All the President’s Men”.
Any truly creative and original American film-makers hardly have a chance–unless they want to make ANOTHER vampire move, CGI special effects piece of crap or a “romantic” “comedy” featuring the same old plots and actors.

I generally agree, but there are great pockets of thoughtful, smart, independently minded US filmmakers, creating both narrative and documentary films. (More documentary these days though.)
