Movie Poster Monday: WAR, INC.

War, Inc. Movie PosterMaybe you didn’t pay attention to the recent political satire, Charlie Wilson’s War. (Don’t worry, not too many people did.) Here’s what’s next: War, Inc., scheduled to premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival next month. The poster immediately recalls Lord of War with Nicolas Cage — the bullets, I guess — and touts a cast that’s, well, questionable.

Sure, John Cusack – also producing – is always a favorite but his choices have been a letdown lately (Martian Child?) Charming sister Joan is along, in what seems like a regular package deal. Ben Kingsley has constantly kept his edge, starring in last year’s dark You Kill Me. Marisa Tomei still floats around in supporting roles, usually dependably smart and dippy at the same time. Dan Aykroyd and Hilary Duff? I can’t determine which one has recently had the more depressing career.

The left side of the poster is distressing. Sure accolade quotes have their place, but not when the quality of the writer is up for grabs. Pete Hammond (I can’t believe he’s mentioned in successive Lobby posts) likes an awful lot of films and Naomi Klein is, well, an author. Having an author pump up your movie is one step away from having Larry King fawn over it like it’s his ninth wife. Considering this is from a first-time feature director — acclaimed shorts maker Joshua Seftel — I’m already wondering.

If you see the movie at Tribeca, let us know what you think.

Any movie poster that has to tell you that its subject matter is “incendiary”, likely isn’t.

I’m with you on that one. That’s like a movie calling itself “controversial.” You don’t get to call yourself that — someone else has to.

I think it sounds interesting and you seem so skeptial of its message. It sounds like an edgy indie film that looks like it has a lot to say about war profiteering.
