Movie Preview: HERB & DOROTHY

Who the hell are Herb & Dorothy? Good question. In short, they’re nobody. Just a couple of unassuming older folks, he a postal worker, she a librarian. Oh yeah, one thing: They have one of the most impressive art collections in the world, amassed over the decades as they live life in their one-bedroom Manhattan apartment. This documentary, by Megumi Sasaki, tells their story.

There’s something incredibly appealing about seeing “regular” folk in the midst of the art world, a universe that seems limited to a particular audience. Usually a rich one. Herb & Dorothy Vogel aren’t just in the middle of it all — they’re practically the toast of the town. (Sound interesting? Also check out My Kid Could Paint That and Who the #$&% Is Jackson Pollock?)
We can’t just stop with the poster. Here’s the Herb & Dorothy trailer.
After winning awards at five different film festivals, Herb & Dorothy will open in New York City this Friday, June 5. Two weeks later, theater engagements begin in Philadelphia, San Francisco and Berkeley.
