Movie Preview: Michel Gondry Directs Jack Black in “Be Kind Rewind”

QUESTION: Is Be Kind Rewind a great idea or an extended sketch comedy routine? TELL US

Having created films like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Science of Sleep, Michel Gondry is known to work in intellectual absurdity. With films like The Pick of Destiny and Orange County, Jack Black is known for his crazy-slob silliness. What happens when you put the two together? We’ll find out this December in Be Kind Rewind.

TRAILER: BE KIND REWIND

Gondry’s new movie — which he wrote and directed — stars Jack Black and Mos Def as two hapless buddies with a daunting task: Replace an inventory worth of video store tapes that Black’s character has inadvertently de-magnetized. Their plan? Don’t replace the movies… remake them. Rush Hour, Driving Miss Daisy, Robocop, all starring the same two guys.

Sounds ridiculous, but the store has only one loyal renter: a senile woman (Mia Farrow), who may not know any better.

Reminds me of Robert Townsend’s 1987 comedy Hollywood Shuffle, where Townsend plays an actor envisioning different versions of his favorite genres, while battling against negative parts offered to many black actors. Remember “Amadeus Meets Salerius?” How about “Chicago Jones and the Temple of Doom?”
