Movie Preview: R.E.M THIS IS NOT A SHOW

This Wednesday a new performance film from R.E.M. — called an “un-concert documentary” — screens in the Boston area and then continues with select showings around the country. The film, R.E.M. – This is Not A Show, follows the seminal indie band’s working sessions at the famed Olympia Theatre in Dublin, Ireland, where they fleshed out the songs that would become the 2007 album Accelerate. Over five nights, in front of sellout crowds.

Sure, R.E.M’s had their various mood swings and musical grooves since the early 1980s (I’ll take “Begin the Begin” over “Everybody Hurts” anytime). Accelerate is generally seen as a solid rock return for the band, and This Is Not A Show reveals some of the origins of those newer songs. Of course, the film comfortably coincides with the release of the recording R.E.M. Live at the Olympia. The whole shebang will be on DVD/CD beginning October 27.

If you live in the Athens, Georgia area, where the band began, I suggest the screening that’s part of a larger listening event at the Hotel Indigo on October 26. The hotel’s even offering special room rates for the event.
Here are more This Is Not A Show details, including nationwide screening information, with all dates through the Dallas Video Festival on November 5.
