Over the past 24 hours, Variety has reported on upcoming projects for two notable and very commercial directors, Peter Berg and James Bobin. And the genres that each have chosen are somewhat surprising based on their current portfolios.

Peter Berg on the set of Battleship:: Director: Peter Berg
:: Previous Films: Battleship, Hancock, Friday Night Lights

:: New Project: Father’s Day
Berg, also a prolific actor and occasional screenwriter, will hook up once again with Friday Night Lights collaborator (and cousin) Buzz Bissinger to adapt the latter’s autobiographical tale about his relationship with his twins, one of whom has learning disabilities. The book, “Father’s Day: A Journey into the Mind and Heart of My Extraordinary Son,” chronicles a summertime road trip that Bissinger took with his 24-year-old son, visiting places they’d lived throughout the young man’s life. This smartly pulls Berg away from the big-budget action stuff (the Navy SEAL drama Lone Survivor is coming in 2013), and we’re pretty confident he can direct big, heart-tugging emotion. The question is, can he tone it down, and handle it smartly?

James Bobin on the set of The Muppets with Jason Segel:: Director: James Bobin
:: Previous Films: The Muppets

:: New Project: Agent Zigzag
After directing a slew of episodes of Da Ali G Show and Flight of the Conchords, Bobin was given the difficult task of getting the Muppets back on the big screen after a sizable hiatus, and proved he was more than up to the task. His next move? A spy drama. Not just any spy drama, but one based on the 2008 book “Agent Zigzag: A True Story of Nazi Espionage, Love and Betrayal,” by spy maven Ben Macintyre, focused on WWII-era British double agent Eddie Chapman. A potential release date for Agent Zigzag is sometime in 2014.
