If you caught the anatomically disturbing teaser movie poster for The Possession — starring Kyra Sedgwick, directed by Ole Borendal and produced by Sam Raimi — you may have been waiting with bated breath for the next visual feast from the horror thriller. (Or perhaps, you’re just holding your breath so as not to lose your lunch.) Well, this next poster for The Possession is rather tame in comparison, yet a good deal spookier. (Click on it for the biggie.)

Movie Poster for The Possession (2012

Something tells me The Exorcist director William Friedkin would not approve of the tagline “Pray for her.” based on his interviews from Ted Demme and Richard LaGravenese’s absolutely must-see documentary, A Decade Under the Influence. Consulted about the proposed marketing for The Exorcist, Friedkin bristled like mad at the tagline “For God’s sake, help her!” Who could blame him?

The box in the background must be a reference to Jewish folklore’s “dybbuk box,” from which spirits are released in this particular “based on a true story” story.

The Possession opens August 31, 2012.

“Sam Raimi horror film” and anything that reminds me of The Exorcist are two things that when put together make me very happy indeed. However, I’ve heard this “based on a true story” tagline far too often – how many true stories that no one has ever heard of can there be. Importantly, while so many films of the past ten or so years have run with this “true story” idea, The Exorcist never pushed that element too much and still stands out as the best of them all.
