What do you get when you mix a typecast action star, a veteran Best Actor, and a TV Brit faking an American accent? Street Kings, an LAPD cop flick coming April 11. Starring Keanu Reeves (the action star), Forest Whitaker (the Best Actor) and Hugh Laurie (the Brit) among others, the movie has created a little stir with the debut of its trailer online.
The IMDb reports the Fox Searchlight film, about a cop going against the grain on the LA streets, has gone through a few revisions and directors before current director, David Ayer, took over. As it was once going to be directed by Spike Lee or Oliver Stone, Ayer may do just as well since he seems to know the streets and cops just as well as anyone else. His script for Training Day took high praise from critics (as did Denzel Washington’s peformance). Since then Ayer has also written screenplays for other police movies, Dark Blue and S.W.A.T. In 2005 he continued the LAPD theme by writing and directing Harsh Times, starring Christian Bale.
Let’s see how David Ayer fares in the LA alleys one more time as he directs a motley but talented bunch in Street Kings.
