A little more than a year ago, the indie teen drama The Myth of the American Sleepover scored big at South By Southwest 2010, winning the Special Jury Award for Best Ensemble Cast (all young newcomers, by the way). After acquiring the film in October, IFC is now ready to bring the coming-of-age tale into theaters: New York on July 22, L.A. on July 29, and a wide national rollout after that.
In American Sleepover, first-time writer-director David Robert Mitchell chronicles one of the most awkward, uncomfortable days on a teenager’s annual calendar: the last night of summer vacation before school begins. Based on Mitchell’s own poignant memories growing up in Michigan, American Sleepover has been called “a lovely, gentle and very true film” by Roger Ebert.
