What are we gonna do with M. Night Shyamalan? His career as an auteur has resulted in a filmography of progressive disappointment (sort of), right up to the odd hyper-seriousness of The Happening. By changing genres and working from other material, the Philadelphia Kid has been enjoying a bit of a reset with this summer’s The Last Airbender. Now with Devil, M. Night is inching back to his own ideas: He’s the producer and story writer for this trapped-in-an-elevator horror movie. Here’s the latest trailer from Universal.
What?! “From the mind of M. Night Shyamalan”? Who is he, Stephen Hawking? If his agent pressed for that phrase, shame on him or her. Let’s get real: In terms of high-level plot, this is standard stuff, my friends.
Devil is directed by Drew and John Erick Dowdle, the guys behind thrillers Quarantine and The Poughkeepsie Tapes. Adapting Shyamalan’s story is screenwriter Brian Nelson (Hard Candy, co-writer on 30 Days of Night — both directed by Eclipse helmer, Brit David Slade.
Devil opens in the US on September 17, 2010. Shayamalan cynics speak their piece immediately following.
