No Awards Disappointment for “No Country for Old Men”

No Country for Old Men has been an incredible source of conversation here since its first weekend of expanded release. Now, the moviegoers singing its praises (like me) are seeing the film snag plenty of pre-Oscar awards.

First an amazing number of critics groups awarded the film Best Picture: Boston, Chicago, Dallas-Ft. Worth, Florida, National Board of Review, New York, Phoenix, Washington, D.C. … Then, after an idiotic Golden Globe vote for Atonement – I wouldn’t expect international voters to get an American landscape film like No Country — The Coen Brothers’ little masterpiece received notable acclaim last week.
On Saturday night, Joel and Ethan Coen were awarded Best Feature by the DGA. (That’s practically a guarantee for a Best Director Oscar.) Then, on Sunday, the cast won Best Ensemble at the SAG awards, with Josh Brolin giving a memorable acceptance speech, even referencing the often-debated ending.
But perhaps the most telling accolade: After over 46,000 votes on the IMDb, No Country for Old Men is ranked as the 30th greatest film of all time.
