“No Country For Old Men” Expands, “Michael Clayton” Returns
Beginning this weekend, moviegoers get a better shot at seeing all five Best Picture Oscar nominees, as studios put their prized titles back in theaters to take advantage of newfound fame. Here’s what’s up for all five movies:
No Country For Old Men
The Coen Brothers drama already enjoyed a careful, gradual release from Miramax before maxing out on 1300 screens — undoubtedly aiding its extremely strong word-of-mouth. Now, it will expand from 818 to over 1100 theaters.
Michael Clayton
Here’s the most dramatic change. After hitting over 2500 screens in an October debut, Warner Brothers is launching a second release to cash in on the Best Picture nod, as well as nominations for George Clooney and Tony Gilroy. Michael Clayton will go from 33 theaters to 1102. The DVD will be released on schedule, February 19.
Atonement and Juno
Both films are at the limits of their release, so there’s not much room to expand. Focus will put Atonement in about 100 extra theaters (to 1400). Juno experienced a box-office drop last week after topping out at over 2500 screens. But the incredibly well-marketed charmer will easily clear $100 million — an amazing overachievement for Fox Searchlight.

There Will Be Blood
Paramount Vantage continues with their specialty-level release, but will blow out the number of screens from 389 to nearly 900.
Check back for more news and information on the five nominees, and what impact they’ve had (if any) on box office, critics and conversation.
