Penelope Cruz Starring in New Pedro Almodovar Movie

Variety has provided early details for Los abrazos rotos (”Broken Hugs”) the latest Pedro Almodovar movie, set to begin shooting in Spring 2008.
For the fourth time, the colorfully creative filmmaker has called upon Penelope Cruz to star. After appearing in Live Flesh (with Javier Bardem, by the way), Cruz played first a pivotal role in All About My Mother and then the lead in Volver, Almodovar’s most recent film. Their shared portfolio of work is as intriguing as any partnership in cinema today.
In an interview, Almodovar describes the film as a “tale of amour fou [crazy love] shot in the style of ’50s American film noir” — even though it takes place from the 1990s to the current day.
Almodovar is finishing the screenplay and claims the idea just flowed: “Like some of my other films — Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown — this film came easily, in one go.”
LOBBY TAKE: In my mind, December means the excitement of another Almodovar film (not this year, though), since that’s typically when his movies release in the U.S. — and they’re usually a satisfying way to end the cinema year. His work is brash, eventful, and daring, and usually features the strongest female characters in film today. All About My Mother is a personal favorite, full of intensity and hope and good humor — and, oh man, Penelope Cruz is just heartbreaking.
