PLANET 51 Adds To Space Station Clutter

Earlier this year, The Day The Earth Stood Still was transmitted to other planets — perhaps to confuse or piss off alien fans of the original. Now, the animated movie Planet 51 is the latest space passenger from the film world, currently hanging out on the International Space Station while it orbits our own happy little planet.

The good folks at Columbia explain that a disc copy of Planet 51 was aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery when it launched August 28. Astronauts then transferred the movie to the space station, where it’s revolving around Earth at 17,500 mph, with a full orbit about every 90 minutes. Which the studio points out is also the running time of the movie! Hooray! Can’t you imagine the disc sitting on a stack of PC games after this photo was taken?
There’s actually some synchronicity here. Planet 51 is about an American astronaut (voiced by “The Rock,” Dwayne Johnson) who believes he’s the first to land on a planet — but discovers it’s completely inhabited by a little green race that appears to be living in a world similar to the 1950s innocence of the US.
The voice cast includes Gary Oldman, Seann William Scott, Jessica Biel, Justin Long, and the incomparable John Cleese.
Planet 51 hits US theaters on November 20, and UK movie houses on December 4.
