Potter, Potter: Final HARRY POTTER Novel to Be Two Movies
By Norm Schrager at March 13, 2008 | 9:55 am | Print

In a slick move reminiscent of Back to the Future, The Matrix and Kill Bill, the final Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, will be split and released as two movies, one in May 2010 and the other in November 2010. That will officially make Harry Potter movies #7 and #8 (whew).
In Deathly Hallows, the Potter finale from mega-selling author J.K. Rowling, Harry and his wizard chums fight the evil Voldemort to the death… in a mega-sized 784 pages. Dividing this epic into two not only yields an enormous payday for Warner Bros., but is an efficient way to get such a large tale onto the big screen. Warner bigwigs planned to announce the studio’s approach at an afternoon presentation at yesterday’s ShoWest.
The film(s) will be written by Steve Kloves, who’s written five of the Potter films including the upcoming Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. David Yates, director of Order of the Phoenix and the Half-Blood Prince, will be back for the final two, making him the most steady Harry Potter filmmaker since Chris Columbus kicked off the series.

As long as they’re not obviously stretching it out to make more money, I’ll be content, I guess. But it’s most likely going to feel like the 2nd installments of Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean – anti-climactic with a frustrating sense of “JUST SHOW ME THE NEXT PART NOW!”

There’s no question the “meat” will come in the eighth movie. And while I have no problem with the decsion to split the last book into two films, I do think the seventh film (Part One of the two-part finale) will drag due to the way the story unfolds – if you haven’t yet, read it.
However, I’m most disappointed in them going with Yates. The reason I’ve loved these films is that a different filmmaker has been able to bring new sensibilities to each chapter (after Columbus, of course). I thought WB needed a NAME for the finale. Del Toro. Spielberg. Someone! By movies 7 and 8, I’m afraid I will have tired of Yates’ interpretation. I hope HALF-BLOOD blows me away because GOBLET was good but nowhere near amazing.

Correct. This book and two movies (the 7th Harry Potter) chapter are the last of the series.
