Review Roundup: MUMMY, SWING VOTE
If it feels like Brendan Fraser is in a new adventure movie every three weeks, that’s because he is. Hey, a brother’s gotta pay the mortgage. And so does Kevin Costner. Here are two new releases that just scream “sittin’ in the summertime slog.”
:: SWING VOTE
Rotten Tomatoes: 38 / 100
Metacritic: 47 / 100
filmcritic.com: 2 / 5
Swing Vote has its share of visible advertising, but if Disney really wanted to get behind this film, you figure they would’ve released it closer to election time. Or would it have been crushed under the inevitable sharp-tongued buzz that will be Oliver Stone’s W. this fall?
Either way, Costner’s back with his first comedy in three years (this requires you considering Rumor Has It… to be a comedy). He’s a regular joe left to determine the fate of the American Presidency, in a scenario that’ll remind you of the miserable problems of the 2000 election. Some critics say Costner is charming, but Swing Vote is hypocritical; first it makes fun of the aw-shucks middle American, then it revels in his importance as a voter. Perhaps you’d rather see Recount again?
:: THE MUMMY: TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR
Rotten Tomatoes: 10 / 100
Metacritic: 31 / 100
filmcritic.com: 1.5 / 5
Thus continues the battle of annoying keyboard-busting summer movie titles, along with Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and The X-Files: I Want To Believe. Brendan Fraser battles lots and lots and lots of special effects, and this will probably be a bunch of whiz-bang fun on your plasma screen, but in the theater? Every critic seems to agree it’s dumb, overblown and mindless. If you’re cool with that sort of approach, you may like this one. If you’re looking for more originality than the previous two Mummy movies, forget it.
