Review Roundup: STEP BROTHERS, X-FILES, MAN ON WIRE

While The Dark Knight continues filling darkened theaters at a dizzying pace, new movies have arrived: A ditzy comedy with Will Ferrell (there’s a redundant statement), a sequel very few have been waiting for, and a high-flying documentary.

:: STEP BROTHERS
Rotten Tomatoes: 52 / 100
Metacritic: 50 / 100
filmcritic.com: 2.5 / 5

Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly in Step Brothers
“You’re stupid! No, you’re stupid! This is awesome!” You get the point. Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly, neither a stranger to playing a blithering fool, get together for run-of-the-mill male bonding. Enjoy the cheap laughs, well-established idiocy of the leads… and non-existent script. You big goof.

:: THE X-FILES: I WANT TO BELIEVE
Rotten Tomatoes: 29 / 100
Metacritic: 48 / 100
filmcritic.com: 1.5 / 5

David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson in The X-Files: I Want to Believe
Believe this: Here’s one of the most curious releases of the summer. Is there a mass audience that was awaiting another X-Files film? If so, they’ll probably be disappointed. The X-Files we know and love from the 90s was cryptic enough — now it’s really tough to even decipher what this one’s about. I’m sniffing one final dose of Chris Carter ego. But it’s always great to see Duchovny and Anderson, even when they’re not together.

:: MAN ON WIRE
Rotten Tomatoes: 100 / 100
Metacritic: 82 / 100
filmcritic.com: 4 / 5

My friend and colleague Sean O’Connell cannot stop talking about how great this documentary is. In 1974, a high-wire artist dances — illegally, by the way — between the Twin Towers of NYC’s World Trade Center. Director James Marsh chronicles the event as an adventure, one that became known as “the artistic crime of the century.” The perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes is based on 29 reviews from a variety of large, small and virtually unknown pubs.
