UPDATE (08.18.09) Sorry, we failed to mention: Word is the featured Avatar scenes will be 15-16 minutes in length.
ORIGINAL POST
This in from 20th Century Fox: Friday, August 21 will mark the studio’s massive trailer release for James Cameron’s upcoming epic (another one?), Avatar. But there’s more, and how’s this for a stroke of marketing madness: Fox has announced specific IMAX locations where select 3D-only scenes from Avatar will be available. You can reserve tickets now, with most showings occurring around 6:30pm or so.

And… Here’s the list of theaters showing extended scenes from James Cameron’s Avatar.
Oh, by the way, these locations were announced earlier today and some are already sold out. If you’re interested, hurry the hell up.
Other than the IMAX 3D scenes, the trailer is gonna be everywhere. I’ve never before seen a list of formats on which a trailer will be released, but here you go, directly from Fox’s press info: “The worldwide trailer launch will be presented in all formats, including IMAX 3-D, IMAX 2-D, digital 3-D, digital 2-D, and 35mm 2-D. The trailer will also be available online.”
And, here’s some fine press material expounding on Mr. Cameron’s genius. Tongue slightly in cheek, but I’m still impressed by the guy:
AVATAR takes us to a spectacular new world beyond our imagination, where a reluctant hero embarks on a journey of redemption, discovery and unexpected love, as he leads a heroic battle to save a civilization. The film was first conceived by Cameron 14 years ago, when the means to realize his vision did not yet exist. Now, after four years of actual production work, AVATAR delivers a fully immersive cinematic experience of a new kind, where the revolutionary technology invented to make the film, disappears into the emotion of the characters and the sweep of the story.
Now that’s some serious press hype. We shall see. After Titanic, James Cameron should never — never — overlooked.
