SLAMDANCE FILM FESTIVAL 2008: The Winners

Fans of alternative film know Sundance ain’t the only party in Utah. Since 1995, the Slamdance Film Festival has hosted those movies considered “less commercial” than the ones in the often-Hollywood-happy Sundance festival. This year’s Slamdance winners were announced today:
Best Narrative Feature: The New Year Parade
A married couple separates and their kids pay the emotional price, in director Tom Quinn’s drama. Quinn blends his fictional tale into documentary footage, with the famous Philadelphia Mummer’s Parade as a backdrop.
Best Documentary: Song Sung Blue
Sweet Caroline! Greg Kohs’ “emotional rollercoaster,” as one festival programmer calls it, follows the joys and tragedies of married singing duo Lightning & Thunder, a Neil Diamond tribute act that’s been Coming to America for two decades. Song Sung Blue is the huge hit of this year’s festival, taking both the Jury and Audience prizes.

Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature: The Project
Frankly, I’m tired of fake documentaries and the movie-within-a-movie, but it seems Slamdance viewers are not. Director Ryan Piotrowicz’s tale follows three would-be documentary filmmakers who run into trouble when attempting to chronicle the lives of inner city youth. Stars Cloverfield‘s Michael Stahl-David.
