Summer 2007 Box Office Results: Spider-Man 3 is #1

By Norm Schrager at September 6, 2007 | 9:38 pm | Print

The sequel-drenched summer season is officially over. And, as expected, a sequel ruled at the box office. Spider-Man 3 was the top-grossing US film this summer, followed by, oh, just a few other sequels. Like five…

QUESTION: With the increasing number of sequels and remakes, do you think a writers’ work stoppage is maybe a good thing? (Now that’s a loaded question…) TELL US

And last weekend, Remy the Rat actually gained 43% at the box office, as Ratatouille‘s second run begins.

SEE YOU IN 2010
If some of this list looks familiar, it’ll look even more familiar in three years. That’s the best bet to expect Spider-Man 4, Shrek 4, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Lord, I feel old already.

Keri Russell, Adrienne Shelly and Cheryl Hines in Waitress“WAITRESS” SERVES
The highest-grossing limited-release film this summer (under 1000 screens): Waitress. This quirky comedy from the late Adrienne Shelly earned just under $19 million in 16 weeks. And about half of its release, Waitress was on fewer than 150 screens.

THE “ALMIGHTY” BUCK
Sometime in the next week, the enormously underperforming Evan Almighty will become the 20th film of the year to gross $100 million. After this past weekend, it was at $99,445,000. That just feels pathetic, but I’m not sure why…

Well, I would say that the work stoppage is a good thing, except that it unfortunately will not cause Hollywood to look outside the box and find new talent … they are simply stockpiling shit to produce during the stoppage.

    What a bunch of geniuses.

You’re probably right. I feel like derivative work has denigrated into just a bunch of copying. Now, a movie like The Heartbreak Kid appears to be both a remake and a ripoff of other films.

This may get worse before it gets better. Maybe we should talk about recent movies we think are original.
