Summer 2007 Box Office Update
We’ve been getting requests for more summer box office news. It’s probably just Transformers disciples praying (oh, please, great god Optimus Prime) that it’ll be the year’s #1 movie …Consider this now a regular midweek report.
And put on some sunscreen before you go outside.

:: Knocked Up stays in the weekend Top Ten after nearly two months in theaters. An incredible success story for a movie that cost a reported $30 million.
Mark down August 17 for Superbad, a film that will benefit from Knocked Up’s popularity. Seth Rogen co-wrote and co-stars, in what looks like a very funny take on the high-school-geeks-gone-bad genre we miss so dearly. (Seriously.)
SUPERBAD TRAILER — UNEDITED ‘R’ VERSION
:: As reported, Harry Potter suffered an unusual drop in its 2nd weekend. Hairspray had a better per-screen average, boosted by widespread positive reviews.
:: I was kind of wrong about Evan Almighty. Yeah, it’s underperforming like crazy, but it has passed $90 million and remains in the weekend Top Ten. It’ll get past $100 million — but not by much. Good thing Universal can lean on Knocked Up and Chuck and Larry.
QUESTION: Which upcoming release will gross more money: The Bourne Ultimatum or The Simpons Movie? TELL US

First of all, LOL!
Second of all, those are supposed to be HS Seniors / College Freshman? I must be getting old cuz they look like they are 15 to me!

Sure, we’re all getting older. I’m older now than when I started typing this sentence — how sad.
As for the guys in Superbad: Jonah Hill, the chunky kid with the curly hair, is 23. And if my math is right, Michael Cera, the shy-looking guy, was 18 when they shot the movie.

Although the Bourne series seems to be box-office gold, I think the Simpsons movie is going to mop up the floor with Jason Bourne, along with most of the other movies this summer. I think it just plays to a wider audience, and let’s face it, probably won’t require too much from the viewing audience.

You make a great point about The Simpsons being less taxing on the audience than The Bourne Ultimatum. But I actually think the Bourne audience is wider than The Simpsons. There are many older Simpsons fans that haven’t watched the show with the regularity they used to — will they go to the theater?
I think in the long run, it goes to Bourne Ultimatum. I’ve been known to be wrong.
Hey, thanks for the comment. If you see The Simpsons, please send us your 25 Words or Less review for us to post.
Hope to talk again.

[…] Knocked Up’s success, Michael Cera’s growing popularity, and the reactions surrounding the R-rated trailer, Superbad is perfectly lined up to become one of the most popular movies of the year. The late […]

I think Superbad is angled at a fairly specific audience, and that’s why it hasn’t done what many would consider blockbuster box office. However, it is a fairly inexpensive comedy that’s already made $43 million. It’s gonna grab a whole lot of money before it’s all done.
We’ll have our midweek summer box office report later tonight. Check it out then on our homepage if you like.
Thanks for coming by.
