Summer Movie Box Office: Aug. 23 Update

Michael Cera, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Jonah Hill in Superbad

With about two weeks left in the summer, we’ve seen our last box office hit of the season: Superbad. The movie that made “McLovin” a ridiculously instant catchword has made $47 million in six days. That’s damn big for an R-rated teen comedy. Tough not to think of Porky’s, huh? (If you’re old enough to remember it, that is.)

SUMMER 2007 — BOX OFFICE TOP TEN

Sorry Transformers fans, I got it wrong last week: Looks like it’ll take one more week for Optimus Prime to take over Jack Sparrow.

Nicole Kidman Is Frightened. Well, She’s In The Invasion.THE INVASION EVASION
Whoa, Warner Brothers. Noboby showed up for your unnecessary, reshoot-filled remake. In terms of bucks per venue, this one finished 27th in its premiere weekend. Ooof. Nicole, we hope The Golden Compass helps erase this one. And Bewitched. And The Stepford Wives.

BIG, HEALTHY HAIR(SPRAY)
I think it’s tough to tell if “the musical is back,” as many predict. (When was it here? When did it leave?). Whatever. Adam Shankman’s version of the Broadway show version of John Waters’ ode to a Baltimore dance show (whew) just broke the $100 million mark. Great reviews for Hairspray, great accomplishment. And I still think Chicago stinks.

BOURNE AGAIN
For those of you who figured The Bourne Ultimatum would outgross The Simpsons Movie, looks like you were right. (Okay, we were right.) Both have earned roughly the same box office to this point, but Bourne’s out in front by a week. After strong initial reviews, there’s been a bit of Bourne backlash, with viewers complaining about a lack of character depth. Hey, how much more depth do you want? It’s the third movie and the poor bastard barely knows who he is. The ending may feel a bit truncated, but 90% of the film is a killer exercise in tension and action choreography.
