SUNDANCE SPOTLIGHT: “American Teen” Makes Lotsa Friends

American Teen Movie PosterUPDATE (1/23/08): After Fox Searchlight presented a bid that later expired, Paramount Vantage acquired American Teen for an estimated $1 million, according to Variety. The rights are for worldwide distribution, excluding the U.K.

ORIGINAL POST:
First, a disclaimer: We are not at the Sundance Film Festival. We love to research, email and dig out the details for you, but didn’t swing out to Utah this year. We’ll shoot for 2009… On to movie news: indieWIRE reports on the screening of the documentary American Teen, which we listed on our Top Ten Sundance Movies to Watch.

The world premiere of director Nanette Burstein’s look at high school seniors met with rousing applause — and a serious presence of potential buyers at the screening. Could this finally be the thinking person’s version of all the so-called “reality” that drenches the MTV airwaves?

According to indieWIRE, Fox Searchlight, Miramax, Netflix, ThinkFilm and Paramount Vantage all had reps checking out the film, the Q&A (which included high schoolers from the film), and all the action.

BY THE WAY… I know it’s kind of old news, but don’t you love that Netflix is in the mix with the large studios? I hope they’ll continue to acquire specialty films, especially those with no other sources of theatrical or video distribution.

(thanks to our friends at slashfilm for the poster)
